ITIN Expiration and Renewal: When a Number Must Be Renewed

An ITIN may expire after three consecutive tax years of nonuse, and renewal is needed only when there is a current federal tax filing purpose.

An ITIN is renewed for a federal tax purpose

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number is issued to a person who needs a U.S. taxpayer identification number for federal tax purposes and is not eligible for a Social Security number. It is not a general business-approval credential.

The IRS states that an expired ITIN only needs to be renewed when it will be included on a U.S. federal tax return or another permitted filing route requires renewal.

Understand the three-year nonuse rule

If an ITIN was not included on at least one U.S. federal tax return for three consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 of the third consecutive year. An ITIN assigned before 2013 and never renewed is also expired under current IRS guidance.

An expired ITIN remains associated with the same taxpayer. Renewal reactivates the number for permitted tax use; the IRS does not issue a different number merely because the ITIN expired.

Prepare the renewal package from the current filing purpose

Complete the current Form W-7, select the renewal route, and attach the required federal tax return unless an exception applies. Include the identity and foreign-status documentation required by the current instructions.

The applicant should confirm whether original documents, issuing-agency certified copies, a Certified Acceptance Agent, or an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center route is appropriate before sending sensitive identity records.

  • Current Form W-7 and correct renewal reason
  • Federal tax return or permitted exception evidence
  • Required identity and foreign-status documents
  • Secure document-handling and return plan
  • Copy of the complete submission package
  • IRS notices and delivery tracking

Do not renew solely for a marketing promise

An ITIN can be accepted by some institutions for specific products, but it does not guarantee a bank account, personal guarantor treatment, credit card, loan, merchant account, or funding approval. Each provider applies its own eligibility rules.

Applying without a valid tax purpose can create an incomplete or improper filing. Start with the legitimate federal reason and then evaluate which business uses may follow.

Preserve the ITIN record and monitor future use

Store the assignment or renewal notice securely, record the tax years in which the number is used, and restrict access to forms that legitimately request the identifier. Do not publish the ITIN in business documents or send it through insecure channels.

TaxBridge can coordinate the filing-basis review and document route. A qualified tax professional should confirm the return, treaty, withholding, or other tax conclusions applicable to the person.
